Craftsman Pro series

Looking at a new Craftsman Pro series lawn tractor. Anyone have good or bad reviews on these? This is the 42" deck model with Kohler V twin motor. It has waht Sears calls an easy change blade setup. It does not requier a wrench to change blades but has a srping loaded mechanism with a plastic cover to hold blade on. They tell me you can't remove this to change to regular bolt on blade. I am wondering how the mechanism works when it gets full of dirt and grass.

Can't help you with that blade setup but it hasn't been out very long. If your going to buy a Craftsman and want a tractor that will hold go with a Garden tractor not a lawn tractor. Garden tractors are built heavier than a lawn tractor. I have been using Craftsman garden tractor for 39 years and if you maintain them they will give many many years of service. Up to a few years ago I was mowing 5 acres of yard between mine and my folks yard. If you want any mower to hold up maintain and replace wornen parts before they take something else out with it.

(quoted from post at 01:10:05 02/17/15) Craftsman lawn mowers are nothing but junk.

I agree. I can tell you a horror story about a $2500.00 Craftsman that I never should have bought. The late Craftsmans are not the Craftsman of 35 years ago!

I wouldn't buy anything that involved mower blades and plastic!

How often do you need to change the blades? It takes longer to jack up the mower to remove the blade than it does to find the correct wrench.

I would at the very least price the replacement part for the blade device. You might be shocked at how high Craftsman parts can be.

Everyone I know that bought a hydro drive Craftsman the drive went out in four years or less. The hydro will be at least half the price of the mower.
I have a hydro snapper lawn tractor. It is 20 years old and still running strong. The new Snappers are Simplicity's with the Snapper name. Not as good a mower.

Not true that the all Craftsman hydro go out about 4 years it depends on which hydro you have.Mine has the hydro made by Hydro-Gear (makes hydro for other companies) and its about 15 years old and has not gave me any trouble so far. I have a BIL that has one a few years newer and has had no trouble with it. As far as price of parts you think Craftsman is high price John Deere parts . As far as quality of all companies it has gone out the window years ago.

If I have to jack a mower up to get under it, or drive it on ramps, I might as well use a wrench also. As someone else indicated, I would very cautious about plastic and mower blades. I worked on Sears lawn and garden equipment for 22 years, and Sears was bad to try "new innovations" that didn't work out. Other than that, Craftsman mowers are as good as most others. As with any machinery, the crucial part is preventive maintenance.
