I have a 14hp kolher engine and I'm wondering can a person be able to turn the engine over easy by hand { yes the plug is in } ???
Or does this mean the engine needs a overhaul ??

THANKS for any advice ........ mark

Kohler made more than one 14 HP engine. You need to find the ID tag and tell us which model you have.

For example, if yours is K-321AS, then it will have ACR or Automatic Compression Release. In order to get an accurate reading of the compression, you either have to disable the ACR OR you must spin the engine in reverse.

THANKS Tom ,I will check for a model #

It goes in a Case 444 garden tractor , that I bought in pcs.. so not sure if it's run or not .. and if needs work on NOW is the time to do it { before I put the tractor together ...

Hi Tom
I learn't something again today from you as I alway woundered how to check the compression on a 14Hp engines too. Thanks

I bought a JD 140 with the same engine. It had thrown the rod through the block. I bought a new short block. The owner was blaming his son for not checking the oil. I told his dad the engine had plenty of oil. The rectifier/regulator had all the wires disconnected and I called our local
JD dealer and the lady said she would send a wiring diagram. Worked fine then. Hal

The 444 Case tractors used a Kohler K321AS engine. If you are able to spin the engine over with your hand easily, perhaps you have a valve that is stuck open. Removing the head will allow you to check the operation of the valves and also inspect the valve seats and mating surfaces on the valves themselves.

You will also be able inspect the top of the piston for damage and use your fingernail on the cylinder bore to see if there is a ridge at the top... thus indicating a fair bit of wear.

Rebuilding a Kohler K is relatively inexpensive compared to other engines. Parts are readily available on e-Bay in kit form.

You can download the engine manual at Kohler.com for free.

All single cyl K series (except the K-91) have ACR, instead of a compression test you need to do a crankcase vacumn test.. that will indicate the condition of the combustion chamber and valves.
