Case 446 Engine swap

I have two case 446 tractors with the 16hp o-nan engines, one is definitely shot and the other needs rebuilding. I was thinking of switching to a Kohl-er engine as it was also used in this machine. My question is how hard would it be to do. Any in-site from some one who has done this ? If its too complicated, I will just scrap them..

It is too complicated but there is no need to scrap the tractors. Put them for sale on Craigslist for $300.00/pair and allow someone else to make use of them.

The tractors with Onan engines used a different frame than the tractors fitted with Kohler K engines. This is all about proper clearance under the hood AND proper alignment of the front PTO clutch that spins belt driven attachments such as snowcasters and mower decks.

Another option would be to sell one of the tractors and look for a good used Onan from another Case tractor. Onan's used in Case tractors were spec'd for Case tractors. They came with the correct diameter and length of crank output shaft along with the special oil pan.

Rebuilding the Onan is always a possibility but only if you intend to keep and use this tractor for at least the next 10 years.

Where are you located? Please don't scrape them, if you aren't very fur from me I might be interested in buying them.
Small Engines Warehouse in Dunkirk, Indiana has kits for engine swaps. Google them and talk, they have always treated me good.

Yes....... you can purchase conversion kits from SEW and other places but... the cost before shipping and taxes is $1375.00. It is not a drop in engine. You must modify the hood of the tractor, the wiring, the front PTO clutch and the pump mount.

This is a substantial commitment in both money and time. As such, it is a long-term decision in order for you to reap the benefits. No one will pay you big bucks for an old tractor with a new engine. Think carefully before making such a move. Just don't scrap the tractors.

Harevy2 and Tom, thank you both for the reply's. That's about what I thought the answer's would be. I certainly would not want to put that much in to swapping out the engine. For now I'll just let them set and see what the cost of rebuilding the Onan might be, if parts are even available. Thank's again.
