Considering a Power King

Is a 4' mower deck more valuable than a 5' deck?I am considering a 1977 2414. Tractor comes with a 5' deck on his ad. I asked about a 4' deck as an alternate to the 5',seller says that is more desirable and is more expensive.Appreciate your thoughts.

From what I've observed the 4-ft deck seems to be more commonly available and for a 2414 might be the more suitable size. I don't know as far as value but would guess that it would be worth something more due to its relative scarcity.

I have a '78 2418 and have a lot of fun with it. They are neat little tractors that are an ideal "in between" size - larger and more capable than a typical garden tractor but more compact and nimble than a small farm tractor.

Thank you for your reply. This is a former power king dealer,he has been dealing with them since 1981. I have been talking with him and he has two tractors currently available, The second one is a 1614 with better paint and has dual transmissions, but engine is original.I do not plan on cultivating or plowing so I am considering the one with single transmission, and rebuilt with receipts.Any thoughts?

The 5 foot deck is mucha too big for a 2414, unless you want to mow in low gear all the time.
The 4 foot is more popular cause that is what the particular tractor came out with.
I have dealt in Power Kings for several years and have some to sell.

The only reason you would need the dual transmission is if you were going to use a tiller or snow blower. Other than that, the single tranny is fine. The 4 foot deck is a better choice unless you have a lot of open flat ground to mow. I mowed with one of these for years and never wanted anything more than the 4 foot deck. The 5 foot deck on that tractor is fine (they used to provide 12hp tractors with 5 foot decks for mowing along highways) if, as I said, your ground is open and somewhat level. I think the tractor would have some amount of problem with a 5 foot deck on hilly terrain.

My 2418 has the dual transmissions but like what PondJeff said, there are only a few jobs that you'd actually need that. I usually just leave the front transmission in high and do all the shifting with the rear tranny. For my purposes the dual transmissions are a novelty, not a necessity. I sure like the tall tires on the 241X models and would probably choose that over dual trannies if all else was equal. Sounds like both tractors you're looking at have their own pluses. Here's a solution - make an offer for the pair!
