Spent a chunk of change on a new JD X534 AWS tractor with 47" two stage snow blower. The forty plus year old 214 was getting ornery to start. But the first real snow, the new unit sitting in the garage for several weeks since last used, would not start!!!! Electric heater, battery charger and finally it started. Sheeeeesh. 50 hours on it from this summers fantastic mowing performance. But I might be in for years of this kind of trouble?!!

Go to the tool talk section. Second section down. Look at I hate chainswas 3. I just covered what you are having a problem with.

New points set to .020, new plug, new battery, clean all the battery cables on both ends, a tank full of fresh gas, and clean and adjust the carb on the 214 and it will start like a new one.

The dealer recommends a battery maintainer and seafoam in the gas and that is what I will try next. The garage is unheated and gets down to 20 deg or less in this below zero weather just when I need the machine. Anyone have bad luck with a Wally World battery maintainer? Thanks Leo

DID IT TURN OVER QUICK AT FIRST OR SLOW, what you got for oil in it, no problems here gasohol and good battery and fires right up. but i have 10w 30 oil in unit. have another awd unit in shop now repairing for customer the rear drive tie rods broke on unit. it has the little rattly diesel in it .

turned over about summer speed, maybe a bit slower, applied full choke briefly like summer, then when it did not start, choked more. pretty soon smelled gas and figured I had flooded it but never a "pop". The battery did run down after several tries and several seconds of grinding.
The old Corolla sits in this same garage and always starts.. Sigh Leo

If the tractor is brand new wouldn't it be a warranty issue? Or is it new to you?

My suggestion is to run it more often. Most of the newer engines are harder to start the longer they set. I ad a very old Coleman generator that could set for 6 months and start on the second or 3rd pull every time, but I now have 2 newer ones, one an 9kv, and one that is a 1500 watt that if run ever week will start immediately, but if left for a month take quite a while to get going.

I have 4 of the wally world maintainers in use and I haven't bought a battery in years. Nice to have a full charge on the cold days when you need it.

I agree. I think it's because of EPA regs. they are leaned way out
and when cold takes a lot more fuel to get them going.

Check your choke butterfly vs your choke lever position. On one
fairly new BS engine which I have I had a hard time starting it in
cold weather, I found out that the linkage didn't allow the
butterfly to close completely. Adjusted the linkage and that was
that.

Other thing is keep your battery charge up and use multiviscosity
oil. I use 5w-30 full syn in all my air cooled engines and that
helps for a fast start. All my engines are in like new condition
and don't have a problem with oil levels dropping due to the
multivis viscosity.
