I used it mostly to push snow { it has a blade on it } anyway it snow yesterday and it wouldn't start ...
Clean the plugs and check for spark { very little spark and it was a very lite } .. anyway I got it going last nite ...
NOW I don't have any spark ... Can the mag go bad ???...
Any advice will be appreciated ... I'm stump

THANKS ...... mark

Mark I can't help you with the no spark issue but I'll bet when you get the 444 going it won't let you down. Your friend Gerald

Assuming it is the old opposed twin, the coil could be bad.
The later v-twins had 2 coils and it is unlikely that both would be bad.

I usually check the stop switch circuit by disconnecting the wire to the magneto and see if the fire comes back. If you crank the engine like this you will probably have to pull the plug wires off the sparkplugs to stop it.

It is also possible for the stop circuit to cause the magneto to fail if the ignition switch happens to feed 12 volts to the magneto. It blows the trigger circuit.

After doing some checking on e-bay ... I think it's the Ignition Coil ... there is a little wire and the spark plugs wires ... that"s all

Mark, try a new set of plugs first! I have seen plugs that look fine just go dead, last year my cuz was welding with a Onan power welder, shut It off, needed it about 10 min. later nothing we did would get it to fire, threw in a new set of plugs and she fired first roll over, sure worth a try

I have a twin B&S 18hp on a tractor. One day a couple of years ago I took a break from grass cutting to get a drink. When I came back it was totally dead with no spark. Took the coil (its the whole ignition system in fact)to the local dealer and he pulled one out without having to look it up. Said it was very common and the new one was 'improved' (yea, right).

It would help if you posted mod/type numbers of eng.

From what you're saying about ign coil(one coil for both plugs)I'm assumeing eng an opposed twin(L head)this style eng used either point type or 2 different style magnetron solid state ign coils depending on age of eng, check type# of eng,if below 0500 eng has point type ign in which case points may be dirty/bad or condenser bad, above 0500 ign solid state & coil may be bad.

If point type ign it may be necessary to remove carb or carb/intake manifold to get to points/condenser to check/replace.If eng has solid state ign before condeming coil bear in mind ALL briggs eng with solid state ign MUST turn a min of 350 rpm when cranking or you will get a weak/no spark condition,if you have heavy oil in eng,weak/bad battery or both & can't crank eng over 350 rpm this may be your problem.

The best thing you can do to help yourself is get a paper/cd version of service/repair manual that covers your mod# eng at local mower shop, briggs website or ebay.

Pull off a plug wire and spin the engine over to see if there's fire to your plugs. You will need a helper. If there's no fire to your plugs your coil is probably the problem. If there's a hot spark to the plugs install new plugs. Hal

The little wire is the kill wire. You ground it when you want to turn the engine off via the ignition switch. Before you buy a new magneto, pull the little wire off and see if it starts. If so, either the wire is shorted to ground somewhere or your ignition switch is crudded up internally providing the ground in the RUN position of the switch which it shouldn't.
