Briggs stratton, Intek V twin

I have an older Craftsman mower that had a V twin Intek, model 407777. Never used any oil but I bought it used so didn't know prior history. One mowing session it clunked and rps rose sharply. found upper rod broken and most of piston destroyed, took out governor along with mount in case. Found a used similar engine, model 446677 guy I got it from junks old mowers said this engine had a bad governor, he replaced that and did some carb work. engine always smoked bad but I hoped maybe it just sat for a while and would clear up. Always ran fast, 3700 to 3800, lots of power. Pulled engine yesterday and found rod broken on #1. Crank looks very good and no ridge on cylinders. Is this typical on V twin engines, broken rods? Or was it because of increased RPM? Wondering if this was broken before I got it but would have been obvious when governor was replaced. Case is good on this engine so considering new rod and piston but don't want to put money into it if it is just gonna happen again.

You need to get that department store junk out of your system and get an old Wheel Horse or Cub Cadet with a 12 or 14 horse Kohler on it. It'll last until your tired of looking at it. If the pict. works this is a wheel horse I bought for $495. 6 or 8 years ago, guy said it had a rod brg. knocking, I couldn't hear it and bought it for the nice 48" mower deck mainly. Picked it up the next day and the old guy says a blower and snowplow also went with it, nice bonus.
Both head gaskets were blown, think that's what he heard.

Was thinking of rebuilding the V twin until I checked crank, looks smooth but is way off. friend just gave me a Kohler 14 hp so gonna see how that works. I agree with old stuff being better. I picked up an old Cub Cadet this summer that wouldn't run. Had 48" mower and snow blade with it for $125. Turned out only problem was that push rods off both intake valves. runs like a champ and is built like a tractor instead of a lawn tractor.

Most of the v-twins I see that shuck rods have been allowed to get low on oil.

Another engine is a better bet than fixing what you have. lots of them out there and the old one would probably give trouble again soon if you try to fix it.
