Is the motor on a 1953 the 5 hp engine and is it a Briggs? As for replacement parts for tractor and motor are most available at Richards L and G or do you have to swap meet the majority of them.

It should be a gravely engine, he patterned them from an Indian motorcycle engine.
Its what is called a T head engine. Intake valve and exhaust valve on separate sides of the piston.
That's what I have been told.

If it's the original engine it's a Gravely engine. Any part I can think of should be available through Richards. The only time you end up on Ebay, CL or at swap meets is for implements and implement parts or when you're trying to get something for lower $$$. Richards is kinda steep. Stuff like cultivator steels are only found used anymore.

Its probably a Gravely Engine. Briggs and Kohler engines didn't start appearing on them until the late 60s or so. Kohler's were the most popular, but Onan's and Briggs do exist.

If you have the big round gas tank, and an external magneto, you have a Gravely engine. Some parts are still available from Ariens, but there are a few aftermarket companies out there too. Richards is one company that can still supply Original gravely parts.

If the sparkplug is angled on the head, its the earlier 5 hp version. the 6.6 and 7.6 hp engines had a straight sparkplug, little higher RPM, and a little more compression from the head change. But nothing drastic. Pretty much all parts are swappable from one engine to the other, and that was common to happen over the years.
