Onan 2cyl 12v coil on other opposed engines

You can.... as long as those other engines do not have some sort of mechanical distributer. The Onan coil is triggered by a set of points and condenser every revolution. But only ONE of the TWO cylinders is on the compression stroke when the coil delivers spark to both cylinders.

On the next rotation of the crank, the opposing cylinder is on the compression stroke and the spark plug ignites that mixture but the spark occurring in the other cylinder goes to waste because there is no fuel/air mixture there, just exhaust gasses.

Most of the Onan B43 engnes are triggered by points and coil. The P218 is triggered by a Hall Effect sensor. It is easy but kind of expensive to convert from points to sensor. The coils are different. The one for points looks like a regular coil. the newer coil is shorter and on top use can see a lighter colored epoxy, and there it there is a flat on part of the side.
This coil would not wor with points.

We used a lot of those two cylinder Onan gas engines on 5 KW generators. They were on field dynamometers supplying power to our instrumentation, heat or AC. When the military went to diesel engines we switched to Onan diesel generators. Hal
