John Deere 400 Mid 80's New Crate engine

I just located a K582 Kohler engine brand new in the crate. It has never been used, but I am concern about it setting around for almost 30 years. Should I be concerned and if so what should I be concerned about? Thanks for all of your input. Jack

If it hasn't got weather, dirt or moisture into It and isn't frozen I wouldn't be to worried about it. I might consider lubing up the cylinders before I rolled it over to prevent dry metal to metal contact. If I was really worried I'd get a borescope and look into the cylinders or pull the heads & check it out. In my limited experience I've not had much trouble with new or newly rebuilt stuff that set, more from stuff that was run and broken in before it sat. Always figured that a new engines went through some significant wear when you first ran it, if it sets before you run it it still has to wear in. If it was broken in that wear has already occurred and you start all over again after it sets, might not have that much metal to sacrifice again. Also after it's run in the seals tend to get hard and may start leaking.

How do you know it has sat around for 30 years? I would ask for all the information off of the ID tag and then go to the Kohler dot com site to look that engine up. The manual will explain how to determine the date of manufacture.

Then again.... perhaps the Seller has told you that he bought it 30 years ago but never used it.

Either way, I agree that there is little to worry about if there is no rust in the bores. If you need it and the price is right, then perform your due diligence prior to handing over any cash.

One of my concerns would be oiling . I would fill to full mark with approved oil and then rotate engine all directions so oil gets all over inside the engine. A little oil inside cylinder and rotate crank before starting would help too.
