Ok lost the starter and battery so I replaced the bad start and the old battery , starts and run fine now but output voltage to the battery is 14 volts at idle but at operating rpms it jumps to 16 + volts ,, ordered and got a new regulator and no change is this normal? I have never seen the dash voltmeter run this high since I have owned the machine.... Thanks

I wouldn't trust the dash gauge much. They are usually cheaply made.
Test with a voltmeter you trust. Check across the battery posts. should be between 13.2 and about 14.5v.

I have seen them go a little higher than that for a few minutes if the battery was pretty weak, but usually they come back down below about 14.7 v. in just a few minutes, if the voltage regulator is doing its job.

As been mentioned use a good volt meter across the battery terminals when the engine is at 1/2 throttle or better. Hal

Hey, I just remembered that on some Briggs engines, the voltage regulator is bolted to the plastic dipstick. If yours is like that make sure that the regulator case is grounded, even if you have to add a ground wire to it.
