Water pumps are pretty foolproof but they do fail. Usually the bearing reaches the end of its life and the wobbling shaft destroys the front seal. Anti-freeze squirting out in that location tells you that the pump needs to be replaced.

On rare occasions, the impeller can become separated from the input shaft and not circulate the coolant properly. Usually, the engine will overheat continuously as a result, thus telling you there is a problem.

If the coolant level is up to the neck of the fill hole, then you should be able to see motion in the coolant when the engine is running at half- throttle. If it appears there is no motion, then pour in 5 or 6 ounces of red food colouring while the engine is running. That should disappear almost immediately if the pump is working properly. The food colouring will not harm the engine or coolant in any way.

As tom said add the dye to radiator, however to speed up the process before you add dye drain some of the coolant & remove thermostat from eng, after reinstalling gooseneck or whatever cover is over thermostat pour drained coolant & dye back into radiator and run eng, with thermostat removed you now get full flow thru cooling system without waiting for thermostat to open & check operation of water pump.

If pump working & you still have a hot/overheating eng given the age of eng I would do a cooling system pressure test while thermostat is out, most autozone stores rent these testers, follow instructions with tester to see if you have head gasket leak or internal problem in eng allowing compression/exhaust gas to get into cooling system.

If pump working & cooling system checks ok with tester & thermostat out and you still have a heat problem I would suspect a blockage/restriction in block/radiator due to rust or scale buildup,if heating problem goes away after removing thermostat install a new thermostat.

If you're having an overheating problem your radiator tubes may be plugged. Touch your bottom hose lightly to see if it's hot. Hal

I had my radiator clean and new thermostat still run hot lower hose is cold, I will order a water pump, should I get the housing and pump? or just the pump?

If the pump is an outboard belt driven unit & pump houseing not part of block I'd replace pump & houseing as it's possible both impeller & houseing are worn,at the very least replaceing both will end any question if it's a pump problem.
