I have CC 108,128, and a 129
What is a 127?
How could I get a list of the vintage models and what features they had.?

The 127 was made from 1969-1971, the 129 was from 1971 to 1974. IIRC THE 129 (and all of the 10HP or larger tractors) were the 1st wide frame Cub Cadets, meaning the frame was wide enough to allow the 10 HP or larger Kohler engine with the integral alternator and gear drive started to be installed.

After the original tractor, Cub Cadets came in series of similar models in similar looking chassis but different horsepower. For example,

The first series after the original tractor was the 70 and the 100.

To answer your question, the 127 was from an earlier series than the 129. The major difference was the 127 still had the straight frame rails, commonly called 'narrow frame' which started with the 70 and the 100.

Your 129 was from the series that replaced the series that included the 127, and was pretty much the same engine and hydrostatic transmission as the 127, but now the frame was wider so that even a 16 horsepower engine could be installed in that same frame. Because the frame flared out and was wider around the engine, this style is referred to as 'wide frame'.

I disagree with the reply that seems to indicate that the engines in the 129 series of tractors had alternators. My 129, 109, and 108 still have the starter generator and battery/coil ignition on them.

The next series that included models 800, 1000, 1200, 1250, 1450, 1650 did have alternators and magneto ignition.

The best book I have seen that breaks the Cub Cadets down by series is "50 Years of Cub Cadet" by Sam Moore. At least I think that is the title.

Thanks. Yes, I have a 108, which was a 10hp. When it finally needed an overhaul, the dealer said rather than do that, a new 12 will fit. That made a tractor! Plus new carb, coil, etc all came with it.. I guess that made it a 128. It's my favorite. I see what you mean by the wide frame. It seems to have a good rear gear case--heavy duty from what I have read and heard.
Thx for the info

Where did you find a "new" 12 hp Kohler engine to put in?

Considering a good rebuild will run about $150 in parts and what ever the labor charge.

The IH dealership got it. At the time they were doing this to several old cub cadets.; factory rep from International saw to it.

since then, Small Engine Warehouse

w.

I did this back in about 1998

Just for further information, the 86 is from the same wide frame series as the 1x8/1x9. Just 8 hp and gear drive (three speed). it was the low end of the series. They are somewhat rare (fifth rarest of the IH Cubs, something just over 5,000 made) because for a few hundred $$ more, at the time, you could get more horsepower.
