Cub Cadet 1450 oil drain plug (thread size)?

Well the kid lost the drain plug on his 1450 (14 hp) kohler. Drain plugs seem to run from $30-50+ CRAZY!!!! What thread size might this be so I can make one with a bolt.

Who raised that kid anyway?

AFAIK, it is simply a 3/8" NPT (pipe thread) plug available at any hdwe store.

If you want to get creative, shop around a bit for one with a magnet in it.

No it's not a pipe thread----straight thread with a flange. The tractor isn't here so I cant even look at it.

3/8" pipe thread is 18TPI, as are 9/16" and 5/8" NF bolts.

So, I would try those sizes and see if it is a straight thread, and one of those bolt sizes will fit.

In that case, a SHORT bolt with threads right up to the head and a copper washer should work.

Might want to try the 3/8" pipe plug, as well.

That won't work the Kohler part # is x-708-1-S and it is NOT a pipe thread but a straight thread with a flange. If it was a pipe plug I wouldn't be here asking. Repeat----this Kohler engine does not have a pipe thread drain plug.

Maybe I'll have to find a Cub Cadet forum.

Sorry, my bad. The Cub Cadet 1450 does have a K Series Kohler in it but Cub used a special Oil Pan on that engine.

If you don't want to pay the Cub Cadet or Kohler price, I would suggest trying a company called McMaster-Carr
( [b:d4652f9f3d]http://www.mcmaster.com/#[/b:d4652f9f3d] ) and look for "flanged bolts" with the mentioned specifications.[color=darkblue:d4652f9f3d][/color:d4652f9f3d]

Special oil pan? I know they are aluminum but what is special? I replaced my aluminum pan with an older cast iron pan when my son stripped the threads on the pan when he forgot "lefty - loosy".

Well I finally got to look at things and the plug wasn't missing after all, it appears to be approx. 5/8 x 18 for all I know it might be some type of parallel pipe since it measured .650" not .625".

Anyway the oil was from a bad seal plus all the bolts (and threads) were missing from the pan. The motor was in "full float" mode. I've got the pan threaded for bigger bolts and am waiting on a new seal.

Sounds like the "brain trust" here gave you fairly good advice on the plug/threads, after all!
