21 hp V twin Intek

I purchased a used engine to replace my other V twin that went belly up. Engine runs great and seems to have lots of power but burns quite a bit of oil, like 1/2 qt in 45 minute run time. I put some Restore in but so far has not changed. Also smokes of course. Is there anything other than worn rings that will cause this? Will crankcase breather make a difference? This engine has a single barrel carb, my old one was double barrel with a plastic manifold From my Briggs and stratton book it looks like all the V twins had a 2 barrel carb. Is one or the other an advantage?

Most likely its the rings. usually the crankcase breather in Briggs v-twins doesn't give any trouble.

The Intek engine is only good for about 600 hours with careful attention to oil changes and clean air filters.

They don't last nearly as long if people don't maintain them.

As trk said the most likely cause of oil burning is worn cyl/rings in addition to possible bad valve stem seals & worn valve guides,do a leakdown test on each cyl to determine if it's a cyl/ring wear problem.

The eng may be a vanguard V twin rather than an intek, depending on mod#/date code the vanguard used several different single barrel carbs or a 2 barrel carb,I have no idea why they changed carbs.

I have 2 on lawnmowers and on both the crankcase vent is routed to the stamped aluminum valve cover, on the top side of the cover. Easy to pull that end of the hose out and if you did you could look for blowby which would indicate bad rings. Running a compression check will tell you if your rings are shot also.

Back before the days of the cast iron liners especially on small engines, rings and worn cylinders were pretty much the norm if you really didn't stay after clean oil. Course pressurized lube and their oil filters help too.
