[b:4c8392108c]I am looking for some one that knows this engine that can tell me how too hook up the governor onit. The '85 was the first year that this set up was started. I can't figuer it out . The way I have it hooked up, I have control over the choke but no control of the the throttle. When the throttle control on the dash is all the way down it still runs at high RPM. The motor #is 143.406022 1065D and the carb #1423 J6P. This engine is a replacement engine for 143.356012. The tractor # 917.255720. I ask for help on another site but did not get the answer that would help meso I thought about this site thinking some one would have the knowledge to be able too hook this governor up. I NEED TOO KNOW WHAT PARTS I NEED AND WHAT HOLES EACH ONE PIECE GOES IN. Thanks very much[/b:4c8392108c]

According to craftsman/tecumseh cross ref your eng a model TVXL220,click on link below & see if that helps you with linkage connections.

Tecumseh used many different style carb/governor & throttle setups over the yrs depending on eng mod# & carb used,my tecumseh manual shows at least a dozen carb/governor & throttle setups depending on eng, your orig eng was a TVM220,click on link below & move mouse pointer over any pic & click left mouse button to enlarge, look at drawing #30,see if this matches your setup,if not then you'll need tecumseh service/repair manual that shows all setups, these are only pics I have posted online from manual.

If none of the parts diagrams look familiar, you should be able to figure it out.

Understanding how it works helps. The governor arm will be linked directly to the carb throttle plate. The spring will be between the governor arm and the linkage assembly mounted over the carb.

The spring wants to pull the throttle open. The governor wants to push it closed. Of course the governor can only work when the engine is running, the closing force is supplied by the spinning weights in the crankcase.

Look the linkage over closely, move the throttle and governor arm, watch what happens. There should be only one possible hole in the carb plate that allows the gov to push it closed. The row of holes in the gov arm (if so equipped) are for fine tuning the max RPM. The goal is to get "something" working, so any hole will work for now. Get it working, then worry about setting the final speed.

There is also the possibility there is a problem with the governor itself. If nothing wants to work, take the linkage off the gov arm, start the engine and control the speed by hand. You should be able to feel the governor arm react to changes in the engine speed. If it has no reaction in any position, there is an internal problem.

IF standard TVM linkage in previous link not the same as yours click on link below & look at setup this is an alt version of TVM setup used on some craftsman eng starting in 85,if that still doesn't match yours goto ebay & search 181570043818,buy the cd,this is same as I have & has all carb/governor linkage drawings in 3-11hp eng manual
