50 odd years ago

I remember 2 families in our community that both had JD 110 garden tractors. Not that rare, both also had an attachment on the front that was a very large pulley that ran off the same clutch as the deck(with deck off). In the center of the pulley was a pto shaft. The both used them on hay and grain elevators. Kind of slick.

Yeah, those were available for a good number the old 'real' garden tractors.

I know that a company named Ro-Way had a front mounted 540 RPM attachment for the Bolens Tube Frame series.

Bolens also offered a front mounted attachment that could drive belt driven equipment.

For the Large Frame Bolens, there were rear mounted 540, 1000, and 2000 RPM PTO units available.

I have seen 540 PTO attachments on the Cub Cadets as well.

Yea, It is a shame that the companies now days don't build (real) garden tractors anymore.
Glad I still have a few of the real ones around.

Oh, there are still a few being made. The JD X700 series would qualify as a 'real' GT. The new Cub Cadet XT3 may qualify as well since they are advertising it as being able to handle ground engaging equipment.

The reason you don't see them anymore is that there is really a very limited market for them these days, and the people that want/need a large GT are forced into the sub-compact range.

Now all the vast majority of the people want is a 'cheap' lawn mower.

Garden tractor with a PTO in earlier days for elevators was useful since the smaller elevators needed only 5 hp or so to work- brother had one that had a 5hp Brigges mounted on it driving belt. Wisconsin engine in Simplicity(?) had a 6 to1 reduction box up front and pto for elevator or snow blower, Cub Cadet had that option on a Kohler also. Problem now is the PTO equipment needs 25hp to 50 hp- silage blowers, feed grinders, etc and a old IHC H is pushing them marginally when the 350D is busy with something else and M is not home. The new 30 hp big V twin Kohlers sometimes used where old flat head 60 inch Continentals are struggling. RN

I have an old unbadged craftsman 800 series for the garden not many options out there for one that can accept a sleeve hitch
