JD 317 Hydro service

How do you change hydro oil in a 317 John Deere? I don't see a drain plug. I do see a large metal line that comes out of the bottom of the unit. Do you take that loose and drain it there or is there another way?

Also the hydraulic levers seem "stuck". Do those valves get stuck inside or is there something else I need to look at? Thanks.

Yep, loosen/remove the line at the bottom of the machine to drain hydro. Don't forget to change the filter.

Levers could be stuck. Believe there is a grease zerk for levers themselves at the bottom of the levers. Valve spools could be stuck from lack of use.

The hydraulic lever pivot points can rust up and stick, as can the centering spring or detent units on the backside of the valve spools.

If that 317 has about the same transmission as the 318 there is a drain plug. I am thinking its near the rear of the unit and you can get all the fluid out of there without removing the hose.

I know 317 and 318 have similarities, but don't know what the differeneces are.

The 317 rear ends/differentials are completely different from the 318's.

They have SIMILAR (but not interchangeable as a unit) Sundstrand hydros.

The 317 rear end/differential does NOT have a drain plug. The pump suction line needs to be disconnected to drain it.
