I have a Craftsman rider with the 20 hp V twin, Intek engine. Model 407777. Engine is non repairable. Can I use a 21 hp Intek single cylinder model 331977 to replace old engine. My fuel tank is under the seat and current engine ahs fuel pump but the 21 hp does not, can a person put on an electric fuel pump? thanks for any help

There were versions of that 33**** series single cylinder Briggs that had the same fuel pump as on your v-twin. You will need the dipstick tube with the pump nipple on it to get crankcase pulse to work the pump. You can put the pump on the engine or on the firewall close to the engine.

The other consideration is the gravity fuel carburetors had a larger hole in the float valve seat, because the fuel was not under pressure. The carburetors hooked to fuel pumps had a smaller hole so the float valve would be able to stop the flow. There is a possibility the carburetor will flood if hooked to a fuel pump of any kind.

I did some measurements on a 21 hp single cylinder. Bolt holes to mount motor are way wrong. I think the conversion could be done but would take some work and calculations to keep belt length the same and all. According to BS replacement for my engine is a 24 hp v twin but is pricy. guess I will think about it for a while. thanks for the help

I'm surprised that the mower frame didn't have both bolt patterns in it, going by how AYP/Husqvarna wants such a variety of models.

Mine did. I replaced the 20 hp Kohler courage single with a BS 20v and there were 2 sets. One fit one and the other the other. Biggest problem was the muffler for the twin was different but it didn't matter that the hood didn't fit as I wanted the hood off anyway for what I was doing.

I went the other way. I had a Kohler courage single that vibrated itself to death, literally, including a 2 1/2 inch crack in the main casting. I threw it in the trash and replaced with a BS 20 V twin. Runs like a sewing machine.

The BS mentioned in your answers may be the same engine as mine. My 20 is the same cubic inch as the 22 but the governor on mine regulates the max rpm to 3000 for the 20 hp. The 22 I have on another mower and it's rated for 3600 where it picks up the extra 2 hp. Both are excellent engines and the $750 is what I paid for mine.....great price.

Oh, my BS has a fuel pump and comes with an input fuel strainer. The interface, other than the muffler was a drop in, all electrical cables fit fine, length and plug pin outs and plug type.

Since I went from a single to a twin there was a change in the location of the throttle and choke controls. If you are going twin to twin you shouldn't have that problem, nor a mounting hole problem. My mower was a Husqvarna also.
