john deere140 engine problem when charging

Friend of mine has a 73 JD 140 , The problem is when the engine is running and charging at 13 volts the engine sounds like it pulls down and the exhaust pipe glows red , with the rectifier unpluged the tractor runs normal . Thanks for any help.Scott

Are you running the pto clutch (mowing) with the regulator unplugged and it still runs o.k.?

A glowing exhaust is usually a sign of a lean fuel mixture or possibly a burnt valve. I think you should clean the carburetor or at least adjust it to be a bit richer.

If you are just driving around you are probably not loading the engine enough to tell much other than the stator is an extra load that the fuel system has trouble handling.

I wonder if the rectifier/regulator could be partially shorted out?

That possibility aside, HOT exhaust is often indicative of late ignition timing.

Has the ignition timing been checked? (It is set by varying the breaker point gap.)
