can anyone tell me the colors of a balck 444 demo is there any yellow on them and ive got a 446 that has a white hood and awhite fenders and what year it is and how many was made

There were two styles of demonstator tractors put out by Case. The earlier ones had special decals applied over black paint on the hood and fenders. The term "Black Knight" was coined by someone and has stuck with these models. The grille area, the seat pedestal, fuel tank, fuel tank straps, seat base, tool box and seat pan were all painted Desert Sunset. I would not characterize Desert Sunset as being "yellow" other than being perhaps a yellowish beige.

The second generation of demonstrators have a black area in the center portion of the hood. These are known as "Golden Demonstrator" tractors. Why? I"ll never know because there is nothing golden about Desert Sunset paint. All demonstrators were marked DEMONSTRATOR on the hood.

The demonstrators came down the assembly line just like any other model at the Winneconne plant and was randomly selected to be fitted with a couple of parts that were painted and/or decal"ed with the Demonstrator identification.

Case never produced a garden tractor with white paint. Many of the 70 series Ag tractors were painted Power White but never the garden tractors. So either someone has repainted your tractor or the Desert Sunset paint is so badly faded that it appears white at this point.

If you provide me with the serial number of your 444, I will try to pinpoint the model year. As for production numbers of any tractor, no such record has ever been made public. It is proprietary information and therefor a closely guarded secret.

my 444 has all the desert sunset you talked about i was wondering about the grill if it was desert sunset the white 446 has not been repaionted it is the orginal color

John,
Are you telling me that you have a 444 Demonstrator? If so, then the grille area is painted Desert Sunset instead of the customary black of the regular tractors.

As for your 446, I am not going state that you don't see what you see. I have been around these tractors long enough to know that strange things have occurred over the years. I would appreciate it if you send me several photos of this tractor and provide me with the serial number. Same thing with your 444. You have piqued my interest.

As it happens, I do own a 444 Black Knight but it is waiting for me to conduct a full restoration of it. Hopefully, that will happen this summer. I have another 444 under way and a 155 waiting in the wings.

I have included my email with this post so we can continue this discussion off list.

Tom, I have just acquired a 1973 444 Demonstartor. It is the Black Knight and according to the serial number it is tractor 13 off the line. Will it hurt the value if I restore this tractor? everyone is telling me to pull the original tin and replace it. They want me to save the tin unrestored because of the value of it, seems to me if I pull the tin anyone could say well, you bought that tin to make it something it isn't. This is my first Case and anything you could tell me about this tractor would be helpful. Thank you John.
