A friend has a John Deere 175 with a 22 HP Briggs
engine. The magnets came off the flywheel. He has
5 magnets positive and 7 negative. How can that
be? He wants to epoxy them back on, but they need
to be the same number of each. Thanks in advance,
(I hope)

All magnets have a north/south pole, check existing magnets in flywheel with a compass to find out if north pole on leading edge or trailing edge of flywheel rotation, check loose magnets with a compass & mark north end then epoxy in place with north end facing the same direction as others still in flywheel.

After reflecting on your post & my reply several thoughts came to mind overnight as to possible cause of problem & magnet count.

1-a couple of magnets may be missing & either shattered when they came off or flew off eng and are now damaged/lost.

2-bad/weak epoxy on magnets causeing magnets to come off as this is a known problem on some mod briggs & kohler eng.

3-excessive amount of vibration on tractor/in eng caused by damaged/worn parts, check poles of alt stator for nicks/gashes & tracks on same,if bearings worn magnets may be hitting poles on alt stator breaking/knocking magnets off flywheel.

Personally I would check that alt stator not being hit by magnets then not even fool with existing flywheel & either install a new flywheel or see if you can locate a used one on ebay & take your chances with same as you have to consider x number of magnets have broken free either thru an epoxy problem or vibration problem on tractor & it's just a matter of time till magnets remaining on flywheel come off & results may be different as alt stator may be damaged by magnets, this is just my opinion, others may differ.

Thanks, I will let him know what you've told me. He has a new stator and it doesnt look like any magnets are broke, and none are lost. He is taking his wife in for a hip replacement so cant work on it for a few days,

I glued mine back on with jb weld.
the trick is getting the polarity right.
look for matching marks both on the flywheel and the bar magnets.

Go to your local lawnmower repair shop. If they are good old boys and have a big pile of old junk out back...get your self a used flywheel. I know of a couple of lawn shops that had "people forget to put oil in them" engines out back. Forget trying to fix it. Also you should replace the key AND you really need to tighten the flywheel nut TIGHT!!!! Sheared four keys one after the other. The washer goes with the curve up.
