Wards Tractor

I drained the hydro unit this morning after removing a 3/4 pipe plug and I only see about 1/4 pint of oil from the hydro sump and didn't find any metal.
It also has a 3/4 pipe tee near the filter and there was oil present. When I drained the oil the oil in the tee drained too as expected. When refilling the hydro it only held under a quart. My manual says it holds 4 quarts.

The best part is the tractor can be driven. There's probably a lot of oil in the other components that don't drain unless you do a complete teardown. Any ideas? Hal
PS: Thanks for your help.

I'll get a few pictures in a few days. Suppose to rain Tues. You don't have much room around the
hydro. Hal

Hi Vern, Here are some pictures of the hydro. It's hard to get pictures that are clear with it buried inside the frame. Hal
PS: That bottom picture shows the 3/4 pipe plug
and there's another plug same size near the Fram filter. I used that plug to fill the hydro.

I've reading the manual that came with the tractor
and it doesn't state how much oil is used. Don't know where 4 quarts came from. Hal

Well here's what I know and it aint much. Hydos have very few wear points if the system is kept clean and cool. charge pumps on the other hand are usually a roller pump and do wear over time. The units I have worked on that are showing signs of sluggishness and power are usually due to a worn charge pump. I am not real familiar with that pump from the pics, and can't see if the charge pump is removable or has to be a total tear down to fix.
Your transaxle should be the storage for the oil and should have a drain on the bottom. The plug you show may not allow oil to flow out and would be the reason for little oil out/ little oil in.

That plug in the photo is where I drained a small amount of oil. The 3/4 pipe tee near the filter had oil showing and it drained when I pull that bottom plug. That's where I added the new oil until it quit. When I started the engine I tried the shifting lever and the tractor would move and had reverse. I'll look for a filler plug on the transaxle and a drain plug. Hal
PS: I used the tractor this morning to haul a trailer load of leaves. Ran fine so far.

Here's a parts breakdown on the hydro. I don't see any pipe plugs for filling and draining the transaxle. There's a hose shown on the transaxle. Hal
