B&S Series 320400 engines

Many thanks to El Toro, MNGB and others that responded to my subject problems.
My body was down for awhile before I was able to install a coil on the outside of the engine. It took a little to find a place so the hood would close.
I added a new condenser and breaker points.
NEW PROBLEM: The adjusting screw would not turn. Had a closed end wrench on the nut and still could not turn the screw. Took it off, placed in vise, held the turning part with pliers and still could not turn the screw. Had two more breakers, tried the screw and both turned. Installed, adjusted points, wired it and it started quickly. WOW what a relief.
NOTE: Anyone installing a breaker should check the adjusting screw first.
Would like to return the breakers to B&S but don't know how or where to send it.

Again thanks to all for your input, Fred

Hi Fred glad to hear you got the Briggs purring again they are good engines, interesting on your find with the points thanks for posting that.

Glad you have it running. I have about 1/2 of the garden to plow under. I'm still getting a few tomatoes. I plant barley for a cover crop.
My Wards tractor is 43 years old. Hal

On the 32 series Briggs on my two Wards tractors, you have
to back the nut off with an ignition wrench. You then
adjust the points and tighten the nut.

It isn't the nut it is the screw. The nut turns freely the screw cannot be turned even when held in a vise and plies on the part the screw turns in.

Sorry Hal I guess you missed my point. I know how to adjust the screw and tighten the nut. The problem is: With the breakers removed the nut turns freely but, the screw will not turn even held in a vise and with pliers clamped to the small tube the screw turns within. Its like the small tube the screw turns in is welded to breaker arm. It is some kind of defect.
Would send to B&S if I knew how or where to send it.
Thanks for your input, Fred

Thanks GB for your help.
Hal has sent me responses but he doesn't get the problem concerning the screw not turning. You can see his postings. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate his input as well.
Thanks, Fred

I've never had a problem adjusting breaker points.
I still have a few sets in my tool box. I will check them to see if the adjustment screw is free.

I just checked my spare breaker point set and there's no problem turning the screw to adjust the points and both nuts turn freely. Are your points B&S? Hal

I just looked at a spare set of points I have. That little screw for setting the point gap will turn with my finger nail. That small cylinder
shaped metal looks to be secured to the points does rotate when turning the screw. If you can't set the point gap call B&S. They may be defective. Hal

Yes, they are Briggs & Stratton points/breakers. I have changed points and condensers many times with no problem.
This set is defective and is why I would like to return to Briggs if I knew how or where to send.
Incidentally, I have two Wards and two Gilson's I have acquired over the years mostly as fixer-uppers. I fixed them up so all have power lift and variable speed. In addition I have a 1970 Wards I purchased new from Wards that has power lift and V speed. Great sound and heavy tractors.
They range from '59 to '86. They all have the same frame except the '86 rear frame is a little longer.
