Engine is on a Craftsman mower, had noticed a small clicking sound in rear of motor. Today when I was mowing the clicking sound(almost like something hitting a light piece of metal) got worse then the governor opened up and will not slow down. I can slow engine by pulling on lever on front of engine, but then it goes back to full speed. I have a BS service book ordered for engine and I suspect I will need to pull motor and remove the bottom to get to governor. Anyone have similar experience?

it sounds like the flyweight assembly has come apart inside the crankcase. check the pin it spins on, sometimes they loosen up in the crankcase and i think that leads to the failure.

Yes, sorry for the change in terminology.

I think of them as flyweight assemblies because that is what they do-the moving weights try to 'fly' out when they spin and that causes the assembly to act on the governor arm.
