16HP B&S in a cub 582 special. Was running rough and has now lost spark. New autolite plugs installed.
Where do I start?

First thing locate & disconnect ign kill lead where it leaves eng & connects to tractor wiring harness, crank eng,if you have spark now then problem in safety sw's,ign sw or wiring harness on tractor.

If still no spark with kill lead disconnected if eng has an oil pressure sw disconnect sw & crank eng & check for spark,if you have spark now then problem in lube system on eng, possible causes bad pressure sw,plugged restricted oil filter, worn oil pump, worn internal parts in eng causeing loss of oil pressure.

If still no spark with kill lead/oil sw disconnected then problem ign module(armature)depending on type# of eng 2 different style magnetron systems were used, early type had an ext trigger module on coil which was replaceable seperate from coil either the trigger or coil may be bad, later modules had everything mounted internal & same is replaced as a unit, you'll have to check which style you have then check with several local mower shops to see if they have a coil tester they can check with, then remove coil & have tested, also check flywheel/coil air gap, should be .008"-.012".

there is a pretty good trouble shooting guide here if you go to Briggs and stratton, FAQ they have some good trouble shooting advice.
