I have a LT-1000 lawn tractor with handle on dash you push up and into slot to engauge mower deck. The cable is about 4'long 1/32nd dia and available only as complete assembly with spring, sheath, clamps and cable at sears.
I just broke my third cable in 4 years. When the first one broke I noticed it had rusted at lowest loop. I filled sheath with motor oil before installing cable. When secound one broke it was rusty as first so I pulled new cable from sheath and greased it with wheel bearing grease. This last cable rusted at low spot same as other two.
1/6th which too large for sheath is smallest cable I can buy per foot. Anyone home brewed better way to engauge deck or prevent cable rusting. If I go back with origional set up I plan useing much lighter spring to decrease tension on cable.

Click on link below & lookup stainless steel wire rope, sizes listed for .012"-3/8" or check ebay.

If this tractor is also being used for plowing/blowing snow & cable sheath is plain wrapped steel buy a 4' length of heat shrink tubing(auto parts/electronics store)and install on sheath to waterproof.

I used to have a similar problem with throttle cable on kohler K series eng on my wheel horse tractors, when blowing snow cable would freeze or rot off in sheath in a short time, changed cable to stainless, installed shrink tubing & dribbled some anti freeze(not cut with water)in sheath for good measure & haven't had a problem for almost 5 yrs.
