Shaw starter voltage

I have a Shaw R8 either 1950 or 1951.
It has a factory starter which works and I've been using a six volt battery. I have to manually twist the bendex to engage the flywheel before starting though because it will grind otherwise and not mesh into the flywheel gear.
Is it possible the starter is a 12 volt?
Does anyone know what voltage the Shaw starter systems were from this era?
Or is this a bendex in need of replacement?

It would be using a 6 volt battery unless someone converted to 12. Take a look at the generator it may have the voltage on it. You could buy a DR 12 volt generator and regulator and convert it to 12 volts. The 12 volt batteries are plentiful. My Wards tractor has a 12 volt DR starter/generator for starting and
charging. Hal

What kind of birds nest is that on top of tractor.
If you take the starter to a shop be careful that you don't call the starter drive a bendix, a lot of shops will correct you in a moment aboot the proper nomenclature of the starter drive, and it ain't a bendix.

Haav, I dunno... that outfit is old enough the starter drive REALLY could be a "Bendix"!
