Cub cadet 1200 clutch adjustment

I have a 1200 cub Cadet That I think the clutch is nearing the end of it life expectancy.
I can not get a good free play adjustment per the ops manual on it. If I get it some what right the pedal bounces back and forth from the stop. I down loaded the parts breakdown and found that there is a spring to take that out. Last night I did find that spring is broken. I will replace that spring and re- adjust the free play. I have never adjusted the brakes on this tractor in the 12 years I have had it. But when you step on the clutch there is not much pedal travel between clutch disengagement and the breaks coming on throwing you in to the steering wheel. If you adjust the pedal for more travel the clutch lets out high and abrupt which is also incorrect. I can not say for sure but I thick that clutch disk is original 38 years old and is used 3 hours every week. So if the new spring and re adjustment does not help am I looking at a new clutch disk or do I have some other underlying problem? If not should I order a new disk and put it on the shelf till this one is toast? On a side note the shaft has been greased at the fitting now and then and the shaft moves smoothly. I have replaced the throw out bearing / bushing and that tin flex plat at the fly wheel side of the motor two years ago now when I was replacing the motor mounts to get rid of a nasty vibration.
Thanks for any input,
Northeast puller.
