Briggs engine problem

I have an 18.5 Briggs Intek engine on my Swisher pull behind mower. A week ago while I was mowing it started missing and losing power, I pulled the plug and it was white, so it must be running very lean, I put in a new plug, and in about 20 minutes it was missing and back firing so bad I had to shut it down. Any suggestions on my problem, carb, fuel filter?? It isn't losing any oil, thank you for any help on this...........Binderman

It might be over heating. Are the screens and cooling fins clean.

Check the valve lash. If any are excessively loose, look at the ends of the pushrods for wear.

I saw a briggs engine over heat, a mouse built a nest over the engine and chewed on the spark plug wire.

fuel starvation? vent in gas cap plugged? Fuel filter stopped up?
