Working on my son's B&S 17.5 Twin II Model 42A707, Type 2238E1, code 9904225B again. I got the flywheel off and starter off, starter is dragging enough I can hardly turn it by hand. When the bendix came apart, it broke a small piece out of the ring gear. Will it work like this or will it tear up the gear on the starter? I found a starter on Amazon, also see they list ring gears, just wondering if I should save myself some headaches and just replace the ring gear also?
I have looked online for a service manual for this engine and can't seem to find a free download. Does this engine have a compression release on it? If so, how do you check it to see if it's working. The battery cables are about the size of a pencil, so I'm going to take them off and take them to work and have them make 2 new LARGER cables for it. Thanks for any and all replys, Chris

The new starter drive should not go high enough to touch the broken part of the gear. Look it over carefully though, could be other damage from the broken gear. If it's a plastic gear, replace it with a metal one. If it's a good metal gear and it's riveted on, I would leave it.

I don't think this engine has a compression release, but not sure. Look at a parts breakdown, if there is a weight attached to the camshaft gear, it does. If it does, remove one of the valve spring covers, turn the engine through. You'll see the exhaust valve slightly bump open about half way through the compression stroke.

Put it back together. You won"t have any trouble out of that flywheel gear.If it"s dragging then more than likely the starter is in need of replacement.

That engine does have a compression release. Looking for an advance weight on the cam doesn't tell the complete story. Lots of the earlier Briggs engines used the ramp of the intake valve for compression release. It would just hold the valve open for about 1/2 the compression stroke.

No just get the new starter and mount it. Then you want to turn the starter so the gear comes up. Engage the drive gear into the flywheel. Check the mesh of the two gears. I doubt you will see any problems.
