I have a Huskee Lawn Tractor. lately the transaxle has seemed to be noisy at times. I was thinking of adding gear lube or grease, but can't seem to find a way to do it. MTD was of no help, their canned answer was to take it to a repair shop. Is there a way to add lube or grease without disassembling the transaxle or is that what I need to do. Also does it take gear lube or grease?

an old country boy might bore a hole in the housing somewhere and put a grease fitting and shoot some grease into the trans axle.

Not familiar with your particular model, but typically the trans-axles are not designed to hold liquid grease. They are factory packed with grease that tends to migrate away from everywhere it really needs to be. Also they tend to collect water, especially if stored outdoors.

I would take it apart and look things over, see what's making the noise. Then if practical, drill and tap some grease fittings to supply grease to the critical components. Another approach would be to fill it with semi fluid grease (JD Corn Head grease).

I have a Ranch King Garden Tractor 4 speed transaxle(MTD)and a Craftsman & Yard Pro both with 6 speed transaxles and they all run in 30 weight non-detergent oil and I add Lucas oil stablizer. They all have drain plugs and a fill check plug.

According to service manual I have for peerless 600 series transaxle same use's SAE 90 gear oil, you'll probably have to pull transaxle to add oil as shifter on outside of case has to be removed & oil installed thru shifter hole, transaxle needs 24 oz of oil for complete fill.

That is the MTD forward/reverse unit. Not the Peerless transmission most of the repliers think it is.
I used to do warranty work on those units. The transaxle is a sealed unit. It was "born" with Bentonite grease in it. They are not particularly durable transmissions, especially when coupled to the "drive" pedal setup, where the internals can be impacted by agressive use of the pedal.

The fix is to replace it, I think the replacement is a bit over $400. You can split the case and add grease but be warned that it will probably ooze grease from the brake and axle shafts. They have no real seal, just a plastic ring around the shaft.
