Kaw engines

Got 2 kawasaki engines, 1 a 14 hp single and 1 18 hp single. Neither one will start, backfire thru the carb. The 18 will start if you change the plug each time you run it but the 14 won't start at all. Any Ideas... Thanks Both backfire thru the carb.

Burnt or sticking valves will cause backfiring.

It is easy to put the intake gasket on upside down causing leak and backfiring on the 14 hp(FV540).

I would clean the carbs first and install new plugs.

Check the valve clearance. I had two Kaw singles on walk behind mowers and both of them suffered valve seat recession and thus lost clearance and did exactly what yours are doing. If the valve clearance is OK and they are electronic ignition the module or Kaw calls it an "ignitor" will cause same symptoms.
