Belts for Cub Cadet

How are "Stens" belts for the Older Cub Cadets? I recently had the old IH belt (at least 10 years old) fail on the mule drive of a Cub 125.

I bought a mule drive belt (off Ebay) that bragged about being made of Kevlar and crossed with the old IH part number and thought I would give it a shot. That was in July and the mower shredded that belt last night.

I've had good luck with other Stens parts when rebuilding engines and I was wondering if their belts were any good. Local IH dealer can't get the original style belts (or says he can't) and the Cub dealer doesn't even have these machines in his books.

I use the Gates green stripe belt on my Troy Bilt tiller when there's a lot of clutch engaging and disengaging. It's been on there for 8 years. Give Gates a call to see what they recommend.

We had a field dynamometer that had 10 Vee belts running off the a Cummins diesel. If one belt came off it ruined the other belts. Called Gates
since we were using their belts. They said we have a fix for that and wanted to know the belt length. They sent us what were called was Power Bands. Made like a web. It fixed the problem. Hal

Dan,

I have tried TSC"s Kevlar belts and they don"t last very long. The Cub Cadet belts are not 1/2" wide; more like 7/16"

I"m surprised your Cub Cadet Dealer is not very helpful. I just bought 2 belts for my tractors from my dealer.

The belts will be IH-490489-R2. Goto: www.partstree.com. Click on Cub Cadet and type in the part number. They cost more than Gates and the others but they will last like they should.

I have learned a long time ago, that it is best to use Cub Cadets belts. The bending and twisting as these belts go through the Mule Drive puts a lot of stress on the belt. The composition of the Cub Cadets will handle all of that. They cost more, but they last more, and in the long run....are cheaper.

I know the IH belts are the way to go but I can't even find them on Ebay anymore (new or used) - that was why I asked about Stens - I know they otherwise produce a quality product.

I tried the Gates belts in the other post and they are no better than the one that my 125 destroyed in about 4 hours of use. They might work on the deck OK but the mule drive takes a good belt.

Dan, I have had very good luck with the red rotary belts. My ingersol doesn't shred but likes to twist and throw the mule drive belt it is 9/16 and the rotary belt is 1/2. Tom
