JD 300 clutch

Hello, I removed the clutch on my 300, after discovering it wasn't working. With a multimeter I checked to see that I was getting 12 volts to the wire and it read about 12.3 with the key on. I'm attaching pictures in the hopes someone can guide me what to look for or how to set up the 4 nylock nuts for the brake.Thank you in advance!

To check and adjust the air gap:

1. Let the engine cool down to ambient temperature. If you"ve been running the tractor, let it cool off for several hours - overnight if need be.

2. Pull the front grille.

3. Locate the four spring loaded nuts around the outside of the clutch.

4. Now, notice adjacent to each nut, is a slot in the side of the clutch.

5. Slip a 0.012" feeler gauge into one of the slots.

6. Adjust the adjacent spring loaded nut to achieve a slight drag on the feeler gauge.

7. Repeat the process at the next location, and then the third and fourth location.

8. Again, repeat the process at each location twice more, since making the adjustment at one location, affects the gap at the other three locations. By repeating twice more, you "fine tune" the adjustment.

Understand you are setting the gap between the two CLUTCH plates. When the clutch is energized front clutch plate is magnetically drawn backwards against the plate on the engine side, leaving a gap between the front plate and the stationary brake plate ahead of it so the brake does not "drag"

(IIRC, some sources recommend a .010" gap.)

If the gap is not set evenly or too tight, the brake will drag, loading the engine, and quickly heating up the clutch. If the "air gap" is set too wide, there won"t be enough magnetic attraction to draw the two clutch plates together, and the clutch won"t engage.
