John Deere 300 The Mower deck belt comes off.

The problem is with the mower deck belt that turns the three spindles. The whole yard can be mowed with no problem and then just as the mowing is finished and with the tractor sitting the belt will just come off with no obvious reason. Checking the pulleys with a straight edge everything looks good and runs true. All three spindles have new bearings plus the idler pulley has been replaced. Any ideas? Thanks, Jack

The tightener needs to be free to pivot and needs the correct STRONG spring attached to it.

Some versions of the deck have an adjustable stop available to keep the idler from kicking back to the "loose" direction.

I think Bob is on the money. Have used 318s for the 30 years. When the belt starts coming off, it is usually in the idler pully arm wear(up and down), spring, or a belt that has stretched.

I have a 425 that would throw the belt when you engaged sometimes. It turned out to be an engine miss that whipped the belt or idler causing it to come off. fixed the miss and no more belt issues.

Is the engine loping at idle ?
