ring gear on farmall cub differential has some missing teeth. removed the axles and removed differential. had trouble getting differential out of case. tried to pull carrier bearing, but busted it and had to break it out. i suppose that i did not have the correct bearing puller. differential would not come out until i removed all of the bearing. i plan to remove differential from another cub . i would like to save the bearings, if possible. a suggestion would be received warmly.

I did that repair back in the 90s on an early 50s Cub and I don"t recall having to pull the bearings off the carrier to get it out of the case. Yes, it was a tight fit-seems like it had to lean over about 30 degrees to clear everything. Did you have both seal retainers/outer race carriers out of the case?

I did have to borrow a bearing separator to get behind the bearings to press them off of the carrier. It is two tapered c-shaped pieces that pull together with bolts. Then you use a puller on it to pull the bearing.

I put the used replacement ring gear back on the carrier with grade 8 bolts and she"s still holding together. If your ring gear is chipped, you need to install the mating pinion/lower shaft that goes with the replacement ring gear too. Otherwise your old pinion may damage the replacement gear.
