John Deere LT 190 John Deere

The pulley on my transaxle fits over splined shaft. The spline inside the pulley is worn away. The spline on the shaft is somewhat rounded but I feel if I get a new pulley it will still fit and turned the shaft. Has any one had this problem and can I get by with just a new pulley.

Given the fact that a spline shaft/pulley setup by it's very nature is a tight/precision fit to prevent either from slipping(in place of a shaft key)any time you mix damaged/new parts the repair may/may not work or hold up in the long term due to torque & vibration,I've found this out the hard way over the yrs in commerical/ind installations, you have several options avail for repair.

1-buy a new oem pulley & take your chances.

2-measure diam of shaft(in/mm)then check local yellow pgs for a bearing/power transmission dealer, see what he has in stock that matches diam x bore needed in a set screw pulley, check with dealer if pulley can be returned/get a refund on same if not used, take pulley home & test fit,if tight to shaft dimple shaft for set screws & use BLUE loctite on set screws.

3-if orig pulley has a shoulder on top/bottom of same & bore is still tight enough to keep pulley true on shaft, drill a hole thru shoulder/shaft & use a small diam hardend socket(allen head)or star head screw & elastic nut thru same as a shear pin or drill/tap shoulder of pulley for small diam set screws dimple shaft & see if that works for you.

4-replace shaft(if possible) or replace transaxle.

I put the new pulley on had a little play. used JB weld and filled the pulley with it and then tack welded the pulley. Have cut several acreas of grass since doing this.
