John Deere 318 problem

Last time I had 318 with Onan engine running, engine ran wide open with loud screaming sound as
if it would fly apart. Any ideas as to cause?

Broken or sticking governor.

Make sure all springs and linkages are where they belong and moving freely. I had a pancake 18 hp Briggs do that. The guy hit something with the hood and it bent the sheet metal around the governor and would not let it move properly. Hard to see by just glancing at top of engine.

Find a diagram of engine online and borrow a scope to look inside engine to make sure governor is still in tact.

Had something similar happen with a Kohler powered Cub Cadet, the screws fell out of the throttle shaft, the butterfly jammed more open than the engine needed to run so she speed up quite a bit. I did get her shut down before all the noise in the connecting rod escaped. Those little brass screws were an odd size and a bugger to find in normal hardware stores.
