Cub Cadet 2166 Steering

Why Worry

Member
Hello,

Lost the steering control on my Cub Cadet 2166. I opened it up and the small pinion gear that mounts on the steering shaft was worn so I replaced it.

When I attempted to reassemble the steering the pinion gear barely touches the teeth on the bell crank that connects to the rest of the steering Assy.

Is it possible to adjust the gap between the pinion and the bell crank or would it be that the teeth on the bell crank are worn down as well?

I don't think it's adjustable. Possibly there was a bushing that fell out when you pulled the steering shaft, or the bushing/hole/end of shaft are worn, allowing the gears to separate.

Check for excess side play in both gears.
