husqvarna charging system problem

i have a 06 husqvarna GTH2448 with a 24hp briggs twin motor. it has a electric clutch for the deck. i hooked up an amp meter an noticed when just motor is running it is putting out just under 10 amps, but once i engage the deck it drops down to almost 2 amps. is that normal for that much of a drop just by turning on the electric clutch for the deck? if not how do i test the alt or the wiring?

Sounds good to me an electric PTO clutch can / will draw 6 to 8 amps, the charging system is fione as long as it doesn't go to the discharge side.

I don't know what kind of Ammeter you installed. You don't say how you wired it in, either.

Hopefully its reading off about 2 amps, because 7 amps is too much for that clutch. In lots of applications the clutch itself has its own 7 amp fuse.

If your clutch is acutally drawing 8 amps, its windings are beginning to short.

You would be better off checking the Voltage at the battery, if you want to know if the mower is charging the battery. It should stay between 13 and 14.5 when the clutch is on.
