JD 318 with Onan engine P218

I looked at an Onan P218 engine that was just overhauled. The only problem was that the John Deere dealer mechanic forgot to put oil in it.
Owner said it ran great till it stopped after a couple minutes The crank, rods, pistions, and rings look like new. The only thing I noticed was the cylinder walls were smooth. Crosshatch was gone. Measured everything and no problem. Crank could use just a litt polishing.
Wonder if you guys think would take a chance on it and a ball park offer for it.
The only thing that looked bad was the main bearing on the flywheel side.

So, the engine is dismantled? Did you take it apart or was it already opened up?

My fear would be missing parts, unless you took it apart and know it's all there.

The motor could probably be made to run again. Is the upper main bearing replaceable? I see there are several blocks on Ebay so it is doable to put it back together.

Without seeing the rest of the tractor hard to say what it's worth. Not running, I would offer very little.

"measured everything?" I guess you measured with a micrometer.
What stopped it?
Did it seize up?
Did the valve seats fail? (They have a tendancy to work loose in those engines anyway.)
What about the main bearings?
How about the governor? What does the ball separator look like? (They tend to melt on Kawasaiks if they have been overheated. I don"t know about Onans.)
At best, being run without oil, some component has been overheated.
If I wanted to chance it, I would definately replace the main bearings and the rods.

Isn't that like your first heart attach? I fix a lot of stuff and you could be very lucky. Give it a shot.I like the rods and bearings. Also synthetic blend 5 w20 oil.

Main bearings are replacable. I am an Onan nut and have a lot of parts around. I watch ebay and if a engine part is cheap I try to buy it.
I am just buying the engine.

I would replace the mains. The main bearing on the flywheel side splayed(sp) and I think locked up the engine. There are no plastic parts in a P218. Valve seats are good.
There was a little problem with valve seats coming loose. I have put in oversize seats in. Chill them in dry ice first. Have not had one come loose.
Have quite a few engines out there with over 2500 hours on them. Just never have seen an engine overhauled and started with no oil look so good.

My question would be. How did it start in the first place. The 218 has a low oil pressure shut down switch. Unless the switch is bad. No oil no oil pressure.

That is a good question. I did not think of that. It was one of last 218s so unless it was bypassed I am getting a less than honest story. Thinking about it, I do not think a few minutes running would tear off the cylinder wall cross hatch.

I think you are getting a BS story.I have been working on engines for 54 years. Even the ones that were worn out. Had a little bit of marks left.
