JD 214 belt trouble

I was recently given a JD 214 mower. It is in great shape. The guy who gave it to me says he got it from someone else and the reason it gets passed around is because the drive belt going from the varible speed pulley back to the pulley on the side of the transmission won't stay on. Sure enough, I can crank it and with in 30 seconds the belt jumps off of the REAR pulley-not the varible speed end. I have taken the idler pulley off and am replacing the arm and bolt that holds it on as well as the belt. Has anyone had this trouble with these mowers before?

You need to look at weekendfreedommachines.com for the solution. This is a pretty easy fix. The belt comes off because it is worn out. BTDT. Both belts need to be replaced at the same time.

Make sure both springs, one on the variator and one on the idler pulley are intact and working. Make sure your variator is free to move front-to-back on its pivot and that it slides and turns smoothly on its hub without being so loose it can get "cocked" and hung up.
