well a few days ago i asked about a cub and you identified it as a 2284 ..I went and bought it tonight..its a big machine...but the guy I bought it from said it wouldn"t turn over with the key...said the starter checked out off of machine...so im thinking pto safety switch or clutch switch perhaps....where would I start looking?..can I bypass these to get it running..have no book or wiring schematics for it..what would you suggest to start with...thanks for all your help

First thing check that main fuse in wiring harness not blown, after that check interlock sw & pto sw.

Click on link below & lookup your tractor mod# in cc listings, there is a wiring diag posted there.

Also do a google search for mtd web archive, enter mod/sn of tractor, owners manual may be avail as a free download in addition it may have wiring diag in it.

First, I would check the Fuse.

It is possible that the Key, PTO, and/or the Brake Switch(es) are bad.

Run a long jumper wire from the Battery Positive (+) terminal to the small terminal on the Starter Solenoid to see if the engine rolls over.

thanks for your advice again..hopefully this thing will turn out ok have been reading the engines weren"t that great

thanks for the link I will look it up today and see what it says and go from there..hopefully it will be running today

ok so had time to look at it and checked battery..did load test..its good..run a remote starter switch from the pos batt terminal to the solenoid and hit it and got nothing...checked with multimeter to make sure the remote switch was supplying voltage and it was so I guess its the starter or solenoid..am going to remove starter and see if I can get it to spin with an aux battery and jumper cables..then go from there..thanks again for your experience and replies will keep you updated on what I find and feel free to offer more advice..hope your having a great day

yes it was running till the previous owner tried to start it to mow with cpl weeks ago and got nothing out of it

ok so I worked on it some more found a problem with one of the battery cables..fixed it and starter will spin engine with remote starter button..but with the key in run position I have no spark...didn't see any inline fuses to check..so if my key switch wont activate the starter and I have no spark when I bypass direct to the starter with key in run position am I correct in assuming the key switch might be bad?..thanks for your thoughts

The 2284 uses a Kohler engine with a Magneto Ignition System.

Remove the Yellow "kill" wire from the Ignition Switch. Check to make sure there is NO continuity to ground on this wire. Roll the engine over and it should start. If not, then the Ignition Module is bad.

Either something is grounding out the yellow wire or the Ignition Module is bad.

the wires on the switch are in a connecter and not separate so I pulled it off the switch and rolled engine over with no spark..then I separated the connecter next to the starter..with a yellow wire running underneath the engine and still no spark so guess its the module..wheres the cheapest place to get one of those at?...thanks for the help

I had thought of that and was going to bypass it but cant figure out how it is even activated..i have the adjustable seat and no wires running to the seat with a pressure switch of any kind..there are 3 wires under the whole seat frame but no pressure switch that I could tell unless I take the frame and everything off..this thing is really a puzzle..not like any I have worked on before..thanks for the help

I think this is the diagram. Appears the yellow wire is the kill circuit.

If eng has an oil pressure sw/level sw,disconnect sw & with yellow wire still disconnected crank eng & check for spark,if you have spark now then problem in lube system, possible cause's of problem, bad pressure/level sw,plugged/restricted filter, worn oil pump.

If still no spark with kill lead/oil sw disconnected then pull flywheel cover & check ign modules as there is one for each cyl,see how many wires going to each module if only two wires to each module then ign system standard cd system in which case I would check eng wiring carefully & see if yellow lead shorting to block/sheetmetal covers on eng as it's rare for both modules to fail at same time,if modules have four wires to each then you have the smart spark system with a sam module that changes ign timing depending on eng speed/load,kohler manual lists ch22 as having this system,if this is the case click on link below & download/save service manual as you will need same to troubleshoot ign system in addition you will probably need wiring diag of tractor also.
kohler

After looking at kohler manual & wiring diagram of tractor at partstree eng has smart spark ign system with a sam module,in which case your loss of spark may be caused by a bad interlock sw,whatever/where ever this sw may be(possibly clutch/brake safety sw) or a bad pto sw/wiring & connectors associated with both sw's in addition to having multi prong connector disconnected at eng as sam module requires a +12v feed to same, with no +12v power to module same may default to ign kill mode in which case disconnecting yellow lead will have no effect on ign as ign modules may be grounded internally in sam module,it may be necessary to disconnect each ign module from sam to check if ign modules working.this is why you need service manual to troubleshoot ON ENG ign system as same is covered in section 8 of manual,my best guess right now is problem is in interlock sw/pto sw or wiring on tractor.

thanks for the info I will have a cpl days off so im going to get to spend some time on it..if I just disconnect the wires from the interlocks will it let it spark or do I have to make a dummy wire and loop the system to fool it thanks again for your research and help

Just disconnecting sw's won't work, you'll have to make jumper(s) to bypass same as ign sw,interlock sw & pto sw supply +12v to sam module in addition you'll have to put multi prong connector at eng back together, first thing to do is check that you 12v at battery terminal(B) of ign sw,if you don't then nothing on tractor will work, possible causes of no voltage at ign sw are fuse blown or wire between battery pos(+)& ign sw disconnected or broken.

If you don't have a wiring diagram of tractor do a google search for cub cadet 2284+wiring diagram, click on link to partstree.com,this will bring up a wiring diag of tractor.
