Anyone ever have a problem with the Recyler model
number 20031 that won't self-propelled. They were built from 2001-2008. The belt looks ok. Hal

If its not the belt, probably the transmission is out. Probably the top bearing, if its the model I am thinking it is. If its the bearing, it sometimes gets the pinion too. We usually change the entire gearbox.

Take the black cover over the belt off, see if the pulley can wobble all arund.

Thanks for the help. I thought what ever is used
to tighten the belt may be the problem. I removed the cover over the belt, but couldn't find anything. Hal

Here's a picture of the mower bottom. hal

I would check the keys on the wheel shaft. They should click when pulling backwards. The wheel pinions are left and right on some toros. I have seen the keys get stuck and not catch the pinion.

Jackssmallengines has a good diagram of that model.

The key is part 15, pinion is part 4.

I just took a look at the 20017 I have. It looks like single speed transmission. When you press the handle forward, it puts tension on the belt.

It was the drive belt and it's not an easy replacement with the belt guard over the drive pulley. Hal

Do you have the instructions for replacing that belt? The drive pulley has a guard on it to keep the belt from jumping off. Hal

does it make any noise at all when you are pushing down on the PP handle? have you adjusted the cable to make sure belt is getting tight? If the transmission is out, it will make a bad gear noise, and the rear wheels on all those recylers are bad about eating the gears off the wheel, check axle bearings and make sure they are not loose and letting the axle gears pull away from the wheel gears

I don't have any specific directions.

It looks like bolts that hold gaurd are on top of trans under the pulley. So, factory directions are probably to drop transmission and remove pulley.

I would remove sparkplug. Clamp brake lever down so engine spins freely. Remove the belt from the trans first by taking it off the side opposite the gaurd and then use the blade to spin pulley. Basically, forcing it past the gaurd. You might be able to pry the gaurd away from pulley but have to put it back when done.

I think I had one where the belt looked fine but would not work unless I replaced the belt with a new one. And, the belts seem to be a special metric size.

It was the worn out belt. It wasn't easy replacing the belt. The hex nut holding one side of the pulley on needs a 14mm box end wrench
that should be offset slightly. To keep the pulley from turning when loosing & tightening the nut, I used a pair of vise grips on the drive axle. Hal

They have a split pulley and you need to remove the hex nut. This required a 14mm box wrench.
Being 81 doesn't help. Hal

A replacement Toro belt was $19.00 plus tax from
local repair shops. The belt size was 3/8 X 35"
and our local Salvo auto parts had a Goodyear belt
for $7.99 and I bought it. The hex nut on the drive pulley is a lock nut. Should never come loose. Hal
