john deere X500 riding mower

Hello I have a John Deere X500 riding mower and the fuel gauge on its not reading the right amount of gas because I pour it full of gas and it always just reads a quarter of a tank on the gauge is there any way to check the sending unit to see if its bad or the gauge itself and if so how?

Remove the wire from the sending unit. With the ignition on, ground the wire and see if the guage goes to full. Remove the wire from ground and it should go to empty.

If it does, the sending unit is bad, If it doesn't go full range, the gauge is bad.
