Electrolysis

I'm working on an older 5 horse briggs with a metal tank. It's rusted a lot inside. I have read all the archives about using gravel, chains, or BB's to clean. Has anyone tried electrolysis on a fuel tank? I read that you must have a clear line of sight to the electrodes in the solution tank, so I wonder if that excludes the inside of the gas tank? It's a "91" model, so a plastic replacement tank is not available. (75-100 bucks for a new metal one) Not really an option for an old wood chipper.

I have used electrolysis successfully on a couple of tanks,
a farmall A and a massey pony. I first rattled a couple of cupfuls of sharp stones (medium crush) around the tanks to get a lot of the crud out. then submerged in a plastic garbage bucket full of water making sure gas tanks are also full gave them a couple of days of electrolysis treatment. worked well for me. a high pressure water treatment might also work, followed by a lot of compressed air for drying. good luck

Steve,
I did check e-bay and amazon, plus all the small parts warehouses. Seems to be no plastic substitute. Briggs # 694315/replaces 492927

Robert,
Great article on placing the anode directly in the tank (while isolating it from the fill hole with plastic.) I will try your method first.

Ick, his really good pics are gone!

He used a rubber stopper in the fill hole. And made sure the anode didn't touch the sides inside.
