John Deere Sabre with starting problems

I have a John Deere Sabre Lawn mower (14.5 hp standard transmission) with starting problems. It has gotten to the point that in order to start the mower, you have to move mower deck pto lever back and forth multiple times, and sometimes for an extended period of time, and then finally something takes place and it will start. I pulled the safety interlock switch off and depressed it all the way down by hand, but it would not start like that either. I used a meter to check the switch, one side was open when not depressed and one was closed, after pressing the button all the way down the check was reversed. I am assuming that the switch is good. Once the tractor finally starts, it runs great. Does anyone out there have any ideas on what to do?
Thanks, Jack

You could get under the tractor and have someone move the shift lever to make sure the switch gets nudged into the correct position when the shifter is in neutral. Then you may need to verify the ignition switch and wiring are in good shape. Am intermittent short like that can drive a guy nutz.

Don't these have a "safety" relay too. That can be bad and it will give you some of that trouble. Check your "Saftey" circut with the meter. Get your book and digram from Deeres web site. Trouble shoot to see where you are loosing the juice.

Try checking the switches under load with a test light, (or volt meter), as long as it's under load.

Set everything like it should be to start, have a helper hold the switch to start position, see where you loose power.
