Where are Huskee Engines for push mowers made?

I was at Tractor Supply Company and saw a little Huskee push lawnmower. Was wondering where they are made? Tried using google and seemed to go in a circle around American Yard Products and MTD.
I did not realize MTD as a machine tool company in 1932 with $4500. But, I still do not know where the little engines are made.
 
The engine itself should have some id on it. It may be hidden by a cover or something. If not visible, check the owners manual with it, it should tell. Most small push type mowers are equipped with Briggs & Stratton engines, but with TSC there is no telling what.
 
If the engine was made by a reputable mfg., It will almost always be stated on the mower itself. The only exception I can think of is Toro, they put their own decals on Briggs engines, I guess they want the parts business as they usually put the engine parts diagrams in their mower parts lists.

If the engine has no name on it, There is a good chance it came from a factory in China. I guess they are fairly good products, but parts for them is a problem. The only way I know to get parts for the chinese engines is if the mower mfg. puts the engine parts on their mower parts list.

Even then, lots of chinese engines do not offer the range of parts we are used to. If your carburetor is gunked up, for example, you get a new carburetor, most times they don"t offer a kit so you can clean the carburetor you have.

p.s. There are some Briggs and Stratton engines now that look like the Honda clones from China and I am pretty sure they came from China too.
 
Current Huskees are MTD built(Huskee is TSC store brand).Got a little behind on MTD engine suppliers the past 2-3 yrs but current spec sheets often say
"MTD engine"of xxx displacement,if not Briggs,Kohler etc.Only possibility I see would be decent quality import engines in lower level/price models.There are only a few mfgs in the world capable of the volume MTD would require and some are the"Briggs&Stratton" of many years within their own country,only recently getting into export outside their homelands.As MTD has long been an Int'l mfg/vendor,they may have bought into or contracted with one of these mfg for spec built engines.
 
Read the history of MTD which started in 1932. They has had so many aquisitions and divestitures that reading it will make your head spin off.
They way they operate it would not surprise me if some day they will own General Motors.
 
I've been a fan and MTD owner/tinkerer since late 70s.My current prime mower is a 92 12.5/42(600series),that I got new in 92 for well under $1K.Still on OEM tires,now tubed,re pinholes,second set of belts,3rd set blades,replaced nylon front wheel bearings once..other than that,no issues except routine care."Lil Red lives outdoors,winters tarped and buried in mound of snow,and started it's 22nd year of mowing my lawn and a couple neighborhoods granny's so I kinda figure it no longer owes me anything :) My dedicated snow mover is an 85,series 800,18/46 twin, bulldog iron 4spd with a 40" single stage blower,which again is a neighborhood helper all winter long. Elitists of other brands often claim MTDs are cheap junk but I tend to disagree :)...And have never paid $100hr for Pro service. I have nothing against any "Brand" equipment and concede that MTD has had a few bad ideas....but if there was a way to check,you'd find more MTDs under over 200 storebrands worldwide than most other brands combined,particularily the 600 series,Transmatic tractors,introduced in the mid 80s and still sold throughout the world :)
 
Lefty, I agree with your assessment of MTD quality. I have had at least three over the years with no major problems. Few years ago I saw an ad for a "riding mower" asking price, IIRC, $35.00. Went to look at it, lady's husband had died and mower had been under carport for two years, only about six years old. It was an MTD 15.5 Tecumseh powered. She said she was selling it reasonable because her husband had ordered a part for it and she couldn't find the part so she didn't know what was wrong with it. I paid her asking price and hauled it home before she changed her mind. Cleaned the rims and inflated tires, pulled carb and cleaned residue. Battery took a charge and I used that mower for about three years. Never did figure out what part she was talking about. Got to where it didn't charge, pulled flywheel and one of the diodes had exploded. Local supply house said couldn't get one at the time as Tecumseh had just gone out of business, so I just let it sit. Got my money's worth out of it though.
