lady gave me a mower. it has (lxs 38)? (not sure about this designation, i am in the house and the mower is not in front of me.) on the hood and lt 133 on the plate, beneath the seat. which model is this?

lxs38 is not a valid John Deere model number but lt 133 is. There was also an STX 38. The LX series was considerably bigger than the st series or the LT series. Do a google search for pictures and compare them. The weekendfreedommachines website pictures are not currently available.

in all probability it is a stx 38. however, the question is still which is correct teh number on the hood or the number on the label?

It's more difficult to change the label so I would guess it is correct.

Go by the numbers on the tag on the frame. Hoods are a weak point for Deere and yours has probably been replaced with one from a different mower.
